Soft-Serve Frozen Greek Yogurt Creami (High Protein, Low Sugar)

Sneak Preview: This frozen Greek yogurt is made with plain Greek yogurt, milk, and the mix-in of your choice—like peanut butter, fruit, or espresso. The Ninja Creami machine transforms it into a soft-serve-style frozen treat you can customize to your cravings and sweetness meter.

I wasn’t planning to buy a Ninja Creami (paid link). I already had an ice cream maker and wasn’t looking for another gadget to crowd my counter. But once I realized I could turn Greek yogurt into soft-serve-style frozen yogurt—with extra protein and just the right sweetness—I changed my mind.

Now I eat this frozen yogurt almost daily. It’s an easy way to consume yogurt and have a cold treat that doesn’t taste like a compromise. With high protein and minimal sugar (see note below), it makes a great dessert for my husband and I. One canister serves two–at our house, anyway.

If you are the only one who eats it, don’t worry. It stores beautifully and can be reprocessed if it firms up too much in the freezer.

NOTE: I actually don’t add any sugar, honey, or sweetener when assembling my Creami mixtures. After processing, I either add fruit or a small amount of flavored syrup ( such as salted caramel or chocolate). My husband likes a sweeter taste than I do, so this way, we can customize accordingly.

“This is – hands down – the very best yogurt Creami recipe! A keeper. I’ve tossed all my others.
Flexible and customizable – fresh strawberries (sliced and soaked in a slash of amaretto make a heavenly addition).
P.S. The guar gum is magical.

Ingredients and Substitutions

PLAIN GREEK YOGURT – Regular yogurt also works, but Greek yogurt gives better texture and more protein.
INSTANT ESPRESSO (OR OTHER FLAVORING) – Try cocoa powder, chocolate malt, chopped fruit, or PB2 powder.
SWEETENER – Use sugar, honey, Splenda, or none at all. Taste before freezing—it’ll taste less sweet once frozen.
VANILLA EXTRACT – Optional, but enhances most flavors.
GUAR GUM – Optional, helps with creaminess. Worth ordering (paid link). Skip it if you don’t have it.
MILK (ANY TYPE) – Use however much brings the mixture to the Creami fill line. Fairlife milk adds extra protein. Your favorite chocolate milk is an excellent choice.

Tips That Make a Difference

  • Use Fairlife or another ultra-filtered milk for higher protein.
  • You can taste before you freeze, but remember, it will taste less sweet when frozen.
  • Try setting the frozen creami canister in a bowl of hot water for 1-2 minutes before processing to avoid an icy layer around the side.
  • Reprocess leftovers to achieve a softer texture or simply let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes until soft enough to eat.
  • I recommend buying several Creami cannisters if you eat this frequently. Saves time to make batches.

Soft-Serve Frozen Greek Yogurt Creami (High Protein, Low Sugar)

This frozen yogurt has become my favorite way to use up plain Greek yogurt. It’s fast, flexible, and hits the spot every time—especially when I top it with chopped Oreos, nuts, or a swirl of peanut butter. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be experimenting with your own flavor combos nonstop.

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 0 minutes
Freezer: 1 day
Total time: 1 day 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (250 g) plain Greek yogurt
  • teaspoon instant espresso
  • 3 packets Splenda or sugar to taste (Honey is a good substitute)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon guar gum (optional)
  • 1 cup (227 g) ultra-pasteurized low-fat milk (or whatever it takes to get to the fill line)

Instructions

  • Add 1 cup (250 g) plain Greek yogurt to a Creami container.
  • Add 1½ teaspoon instant espresso, 3 packets Splenda or sugar to taste, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, and ¼ teaspoon guar gum. (Remember that when this mixture is frozen, it will not taste as sweet. Taste and adjust according to your sweet tooth.)
  • Pour 1 cup (227 g) ultra-pasteurized low-fat milk into the Creami container–or enough to bring it to the fill line.
  • Use an immersion blender or whisk to blend until creamy.
  • Place the Creami container in the freezer for 24 hrs.
  • When ready to eat, place the container with the frozen mixture in hot water for 1-2 minutes. Process the Creami on the Lite Ice Cream or Sorbet setting (experiment to get the texture you like best). If the mixture looks powdery when finished, close it up and respin. Eat immediately.
  • If you have frozen yogurt left over, put it back in the freezer. You can either re-process it when you get ready or let it sit on the counter or microwave for 30 seconds-1 minute) until it’s soft enough to eat.

Notes

Notes:
  1. This recipe contains more protein, depending on the kind of milk you use. Ultra-pasteurized milk, like Fairlife, contributes significantly more protein than listed here.
  2. A thin layer of ice often remains around the interior wall of the Creami container when using low-fat ingredients after processing. My solution?  Set the Creami container into a bowl of hot water for 1-2 minutes to melt the icy outer layer before processing it with the Ninja Creami machine. I usually end up reprocessing one time to make the mixture creamier.

FAQs

Can I use regular yogurt instead of Greek?
Yes, but the result may be slightly icier and less rich.

Do I need guar gum?
It’s not required but I recommend it for low-fat Creamis. It makes the texture creamier.

What if I don’t have an immersion blender?
Use a standard blender (especially if using chunks of fruit) or whisk well by hand.

Can I double the batch?
No, the Creami container holds only two servings (at our house). But you can prep multiple containers at once.

Can I eat leftovers later?
Yes! Freeze and respin as needed, or microwave for 30 seconds to soften.

Final Thoughts

Let’s be honest. I’m totally hooked on my yogurt Creamies—but no, they’re not as creamy or velvety-rich as that premium ice cream from the store or your favorite scoop shop. Of course, that kind of indulgence comes at a price—and not just in dollars. It takes a lot of cream and sugar to make it that rich.

Yogurt Creamies, on the other hand, are something I can enjoy every day without worrying about my jeans getting tight. I try to keep the add-ins reasonable, but I never feel like I’m missing out. They’re quick, flexible, and satisfying—like a real treat that just happens to be better for you. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll start coming up with your own flavor ideas without even trying.
